Whether you’re gearing up for a job interview or just getting ready for another day, the right song can be exactly what you need to remind you who you are and what you’re capable of.
So, with International Women’s Day on the horizon, we thought it was the perfect time to round up some of the very best girl power songs out there. Handpicked by our brilliant independent creators, these are the songs that they turn to when they need a boost (or maybe just a dramatic solo kitchen dance break).
They’ve been busy designing a bunch of female empowerment cards too, perfect for hyping up your best mate or letting your mum know just how amazing she is:
And if you’re lucky enough to know multiple marvellous women, our love & friendship card packs allow you to spread appreciation far and wide. Right then, with all that out of the way, it’s time to dive into our empowering songs for women playlist. Ahem… cue the music!
1. Man! I Feel Like a Woman! – Shania Twain
Starting off strong, we have Shania Twain’s 1997 chart-topper, Man! I Feel Like a Woman! Perfect for a confidence boost or a sing song with your mates before a night out, this is a must-add track to your playlist.
Evan from Evannave says that it gives that ‘spin-around-the-dancefloor, who-cares-what-anyone-else-thinks’ kind of feeling, and honestly, we couldn’t agree more.
2. Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
Another pick from Evan, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, is basically a pep talk set to a catchy pop tune. Ideal if you’re feeling a little lost, it’s an anthem about personal empowerment, embracing the unknown, and remembering to feel excited about what’s to come.
3. King – Florence and the Machine
Next up we have a favourite of Jo Segurola from Wild Card. King is an anti-patriarchal song about artistic ambitions and challenging expectations. It’s the kind of track that reminds you to go after what you want unapologetically, and never let anyone tell you what you should and shouldn’t be.
4. Respect – Aretha Franklin
Kasia from Kasia Cards chose Respect, saying “it’s a forever classic that makes you feel about 10 feet tall”. A fiery and empowering track, it was released in 1967 and became an anthem for both the Civil Rights and feminist movements. Today, it’s still as bold and inspiring.
5. Flowers – Miley Cyrus
Another pick from Kasia is Flowers by Miley Cyrus, a modern self-love banger. This song is the perfect reminder to choose yourself, celebrate yourself, and maybe even buy yourself a bunch of flowers from the shop every now and then. Go on, you deserve it.
6. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) from the Vault (Taylor’s Version) – Taylor Swift
Next is Taylor Swift’s gut-wrenching autumnal anthem All Too Well (best screamed thinking about anyone who’s ever done you wrong). Chosen by Ruthie from Ohverlee HQ, it’s a heartbreak track that brings up all the emotions, while still leaving you feeling empowered.
We couldn’t not mention Taylor’s The Man here too, a clever, upbeat critique of double standards. While All Too Well will leave you weeping, The Man will have you singing at the top of your lungs.
7. Dancing Queen – ABBA
Another track suggested by Ruthie is ABBA’s Dancing Queen. This song offers a feel-good, euphoric dance-with-your-best-mates-in-the-kitchen kind of vibe that never fails to cheer you up. Mums love it, grandmas love it, we love it, literally everyone loves it.
8. Break My Soul – Beyoncé
Stormy Knight chose Beyoncé’s Break My Soul, a song that’s all about making your own foundations and finding independence. Whether you’re tackling work, a workout, or just Monday morning, it leaves you ready to take on anything.
You could throw on almost any Beyoncé song and end up feeling empowered. We’re thinking Run the World (Girls), Formation, Freedom, and Irreplaceable, just to name a few.
9. Spice Up Your Life – Spice Girls
Jen from Studio27eleven went with Spice Up Your Life, bringing all the nineties girl power vibes we’ve been missing from our playlist. A classic coming-of-age song to sing in your bedroom, this one’s pure, unfiltered joy packed with tons of nostalgia.
10. Who Do You Think You Are? – Spice Girls
Go on then, let’s throw another Spice Girls track in to round things off. For Lucy Nicholson from Lucy Maggie Designs, this is the one song that can always lift her up when she’s feeling down. With its infectious energy and fun lyrics, it’s one of those that you can’t help but dance along to.
And there we have it, a bunch of female empowerment songs to inspire you! Of course, there are thousands more songs out there, from breakup bangers to confidence-boosting classics, and this is just a handful of the ones we love. Think of it as your starting point, then add all your favourite songs about strong women to make it unique to you.
If you’re looking to keep the energy going, dip into these girl power quotes for an extra dose of inspiration. We’ve also got some ideas for what to write in a friendship card if you want to spread the good vibes around.
